This rock takes its name (like the mineral dolomite) from the French naturalist and geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801), who observed this rock in the mountain groups of the Dolomites .
When in a limestone the calcite is partially replaced by dolomite, it is called magnesian limestone, dolomitic limestone or calcareous dolomite depending on the dominant mineralogical species in percentage.
